An Apple Notes alternative that works on Windows and Android

Apple Notes has apps only for iPhone, iPad and Mac; elsewhere it’s iCloud.com, online only. ThreadPage runs in the browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone, works offline, and gives each project its own thread of notes.

At a glance

Runs on
The browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone. Once it has opened, it works offline.
Keeps
Each project as a thread of dated notes, so the newest is always at the end.
Moving over
Import reads Apple Notes’ Markdown export, or Apple’s copy of your data from privacy.apple.com.

Which one fits you

Stay with Apple Notes if

  • you work only on an iPhone, iPad and Mac, and want them in sync for free;
  • you scan documents, draw or record audio in your notes;
  • you edit the same note with other people at the same time;
  • you need end-to-end encryption.

Try ThreadPage if

  • you also work on Windows, Linux or Android, sometimes offline;
  • you keep several long projects going and lose track of where each one stopped;
  • with Pro, you want Claude, ChatGPT or Codex to read a project’s notes and add to them;
  • with Pro, you share one project with a client who works in a browser.

You can also keep both: Apple Notes for quick notes on your phone, ThreadPage for the projects that run for weeks.

Before

A note called “Website for Anna” grows for a month. The brief is at the top, last week’s feedback is somewhere in the middle, and the newest decision was typed over an old one. When Anna asks why the menu moved, you scroll through a month of edits and can’t tell which paragraph came last.

Why a thread, not one long note

  1. Every session adds a note

    Each time you work on the project, you add a dated note at the end, so last week’s note stays as you wrote it and the order shows what came last.

  2. The last note says where you stopped

    One line before you switch: what’s done and what’s next. Next week, that’s the first thing you read.

  3. Status across projects

    Mark a thread Active, Waiting or Done, and filter List to Waiting to see which projects wait on someone else.

  4. One project, shared on its own

    With Pro, share a single thread with a client: Can view, Can add notes or Can edit. They join free and work in their browser.

Where Apple Notes is better

  • Its apps are already on your iPhone, iPad and Mac, and sync between them is free.
  • It scans documents, takes handwriting and drawings, and records audio with a transcript. Search finds handwritten words.
  • Up to 100 people edit one note and see each other’s changes as they type.
  • Locked notes are end-to-end encrypted, and with Advanced Data Protection all notes are, except those shared by link.
  • Apple Intelligence Writing Tools summarize and proofread on supported devices.

Moving your notes over

On a Mac with macOS 26 or later, select the notes of a folder in Apple Notes and export them as Markdown; on iPhone or iPad with iOS 26 or later, export one note at a time as Markdown and save it to Files. On Windows, request a copy of your data at privacy.apple.com, choose iCloud Notes and download the ZIP.

In ThreadPage, open Settings → Import & export → Import notes and choose the files. Text, headings, lists, checklists, tables, images and #tags come across; locked notes stay behind. Each note becomes a thread with its date, in a new folder you can remove in one step, and the files are read in your browser, never sent to ThreadPage.

A long note arrives as one thread holding that note. From then on, add a note each time you work on the project. Import from Apple Notes

Questions

  • Is there ThreadPage for Windows or Android?

    Yes, in the browser, on Android phones too: open thread.page and start writing. Once it has opened, it keeps working offline, and import, sync and connections work there.

  • Does ThreadPage sync with iCloud?

    No. With Pro, your notes sync through your ThreadPage account across your devices. On Free, they stay in the browser you write in.

  • Can I lock a note with a password?

    No. ThreadPage has no locked notes and no end-to-end encryption, so keep passwords and other secrets out of it.

  • Who can read my notes?

    On Free, nobody at ThreadPage: your notes stay in your browser. With Pro, they’re stored on servers in Europe and encrypted in transit and at rest, but not end to end, and ThreadPage’s servers read them for sync, sharing and the connections you add.

Limits

  • On Free, your notes stay in the one browser you write in, and clearing its site data removes them, so export a backup now and then. With Pro, they sync across your devices.
  • Search finds a file by its name, not by the text inside it. You can attach scans and recordings as files.
  • There are no live cursors. Each note shows who added it and who edited it last.
