Settling a parent’s estate

A thread for the bank, the pension, the house and the tax office. You write it down once; your sister, your brother and the lawyer read it instead of calling.

Before

Dad died in September, and you are the executor because you live closest. The bank, the pension fund, the life insurer and the tax office each want a certified copy, a form and a reference number, and each moves at its own pace. It all lives in a notebook by the phone. Your brother asks in the family chat where things stand, and your sister wonders aloud why the house isn’t sold yet.

Why a thread, not a notebook and a spreadsheet

  1. Each institution at its own pace

A thread each, so the bank’s reference doesn’t end up under the pension’s, and Waiting shows which ones have your papers.

  2. Your family reads instead of asking

Share the folder at Can view. They see what was sent and when, and New marks what changed since they last looked.

  3. The proof sits with the call

The name of the person you spoke to, the copy you sent and the letter that came back are in one thread, in order.

  4. Back when they said

They said 15 working days: Remind me… on the thread brings it back the day they’re up.

The moment

Monday 2 November, before the calls: what you’re waiting on, and from whom.

Limits

  • Everyone in a shared folder sees every note in it: keep anything only for you in a thread outside it.
  • Images only: photograph the letter or take a screenshot.
  • Tables have no formulas: keep the final accounts in a spreadsheet.
  • Notes aren’t end-to-end encrypted: keep passwords and full account numbers in a password manager.
