Export your notes

Take your notes to another app, or keep a ThreadPage backup you can import back.

Where to export

In Settings → Import & export, Export to other apps exports all your notes as Markdown or Evernote files, and Export backup saves everything as one ThreadPage backup.

A thread’s menu has Export thread… and a folder’s menu has Export folder…, with the same formats plus a ThreadPage backup of just that thread or folder. A thread can also be saved as a PDF.

Markdown

One Markdown file for each thread, in folders as in ThreadPage, with each thread’s images and files in a folder beside it. One thread without files downloads as a single .md file; everything else comes as a ZIP.

Each file starts with the thread’s details: its title, description, status, dates and tags, and a threadpage key with the thread’s id. Notes follow in order, each starting with a line with its date and time, with a horizontal rule between them. A thread with a single note has neither; its date is in the details. In shared threads every date line also names who wrote the note, so a single note there starts with one too.

Second note…

Checklists, tables, links, images, files and #tags are written as Markdown, and Monostyled text as code. Underline, text colors, fonts and sizes aren’t; a PDF keeps them. A link to a note in the same export points to its thread’s file, and any other note link points to the note in ThreadPage.

File names work on Windows, macOS and Linux: characters those systems don’t allow are left out, long titles are shortened, and the full title stays in the file.

Evernote (.enex)

Evernote’s own format, also read by other apps that import .enex files. Each thread becomes one note with its title, dates, tags, images and files; its notes are separated by a line, each with its date.

An .enex file has no folders, so when you export folders, each gets an .enex file of its own, named after its path, and threads outside any folder go into ThreadPage.enex. Several files come together in a ZIP.

For an app on iPhone or iPad, choose Markdown.

PDF

For one thread. ThreadPage prepares the thread with its description and its notes under their days, with images, files by name and size, and note references as they show in ThreadPage, then opens the print dialog, where you choose to save it as a PDF. The PDF is named after the thread.

ThreadPage backup

A complete copy for importing back into ThreadPage: folders, threads, notes, drafts, Archive, Trash, recovery versions and the original images and files your notes hold. Importing a backup adds a copy; it never replaces your notes.

The backup is a ZIP with a manifest.json and an attachments folder holding each original once, named by its id. The manifest names its format, thread-page.portable-backup, and its schemaVersion: 1 for a backup with images only within the older limits, which every version of ThreadPage reads, and 2 for one with other files. It also records a hash of its notes, so an import can tell the file is whole.

What isn’t exported

Reminders, version history, sharing and connections belong to your account rather than to your notes, so no export carries them, the backup included.

Markdown and Evernote files also leave out Trash, Drafts, recovery versions, and pins and Done marks on notes; a ThreadPage backup keeps them.
