# Settling a parent’s estate

A thread for the bank, the pension, the house and the tax office. You write it down once; your sister, your brother and the lawyer read it instead of calling.

## At a glance

- **For:** Whoever is the executor, often the one who lives closest.
- **You keep:** A folder for the estate with a thread per institution, shared with your sister and brother at Can view and the lawyer at Can add notes.
- **Nothing to set up:** A short note after every call and letter, with a photo of what you sent and what came back.
- **The moment:** On Monday, List filtered to Waiting shows which institutions have your papers, since when, and under which reference.
- **Plan:** Pro · From USD 7.99 a month. 14 days free, no card. Only the one who shares needs Pro. Your family and the lawyer join free.

## Before

Dad died in September, and you are the executor because you live closest. The bank, the pension fund, the life insurer and the tax office each want a certified copy, a form and a reference number, and each moves at its own pace. It all lives in a notebook by the phone. Your brother asks in the family chat where things stand, and your sister wonders aloud why the house isn’t sold yet.

## Why a thread, not a notebook and a spreadsheet

### Each institution at its own pace

A thread each, so the bank’s reference doesn’t end up under the pension’s, and Waiting shows which ones have your papers.

### Your family reads instead of asking

Share the folder at Can view. They see what was sent and when, and New marks what changed since they last looked.

### The proof sits with the call

The name of the person you spoke to, the copy you sent and the letter that came back are in one thread, in order.

### Back when they said

They said 15 business days: Remind me… on the thread brings it back the day they’re up.

## The moment

Monday 2 November, before the calls: what you’re waiting on, and from whom.

Example list:

- Dad’s estate · Pension · Final statement requested on 14 October, reference PN-3391. Call again on Thursday. · Waiting
- Dad’s estate · Life insurance · They won’t take a photocopy. Sent certified copy 5 on 28 October. · Waiting
- Dad’s estate · House: clear and sell · The agent values it on 6 November. Ben wants to be there. · Waiting
- Dad’s estate · Tax office · Nadia filed the final return on 22 October. · Waiting

## Limits

- Everyone in a shared folder sees every note in it: keep anything only for you in a thread outside it.
- Search finds a file by its name, not by the text inside it: name a scan after the letter.
- Tables have no formulas: keep the final accounts in a spreadsheet.
- Notes aren’t end-to-end encrypted: keep passwords and full account numbers in a password manager.
