# Storage & backups

Where your files are kept, what counts toward Pro’s storage, how to free space, and how to keep a backup.

## Adding files

A note can hold files of any type, up to 2 GB each, on every plan. In the composer, choose **+** → **Attach files…**, or drop or paste files into it. While you edit a note, **Attach files** is in its toolbar. On a phone, **Attach files…** also offers your photo library and camera.

Photos and screenshots up to 100 megapixels show in the note. Other files, including TIFF, PSD and SVG images, show as a row with their name and size. Choose a file to open it: images, PDFs, text, audio and video open in ThreadPage, and any file can be downloaded. With Pro and Sync on, HEIC and AVIF photos show in the note in any browser; otherwise they show only in a browser that can open them, and as a row elsewhere.

To keep files without writing anything, choose **Add files…** in **Storage**: they go into a new note in the thread you pick. **Add to thread…** in a file’s menu there puts a file you already have into a new note in any thread; it still counts once.

## Where files are kept

On Free, files stay in this browser with your notes. ThreadPage sets no limit on them; your browser decides how much space this site gets. So that your writing can always be saved, a file isn’t added if it would leave this browser less than 500 MB free, or 5% of its space if that’s more.

With Pro and Sync on, files are kept in your account. A file uploads from the browser you added it in, while ThreadPage is open there. Until it has uploaded, it shows **Uploading…** or **Waiting to upload**, and that browser may hold its only copy.

With Pro and Sync off in this browser, files you add stay here and upload when you turn Sync on. **Storage** lists this browser’s files, with your account’s usage on a second line. A file your account has but this browser doesn’t shows **Not in this browser**, and **Load from account** or **Download** gets it.

## Storage limit

Pro includes 5 GB of storage; you can choose 50 GB or 100 GB instead. [Plans & billing](https://thread.page/help/billing.md#storage) has the price of each size and how to change it.

Each file your account keeps counts once, however many notes use it:

- files in notes, in Archive and in Trash
- files in drafts and recovery versions
- files in earlier versions of notes, kept for up to 90 days
- files in changes waiting for your review
- files people add to places you share, from the moment they attach them

Text, previews and our backups don’t count. Files in places other people share with you count toward their owner’s storage.

A file that nothing uses any more shows as **Unused** in Storage. It’s deleted after 30 days and counts until then.

## Seeing and freeing space

**Storage** in the sidebar lists your files. With Pro, the line at the top shows how much of your storage you use. **Status** shows how much space each group of files takes, such as **In Trash** or **Unused**, and **Largest first** puts the biggest files at the top.

To free space:

- **Delete file…** in a file’s menu deletes it everywhere at once: from every note, Trash, drafts and earlier versions, and from places you share. Its space is free right away, and notes show **File deleted** where it was. This can’t be undone.
- Set **Status** to **Unused** and choose **Delete unused files…** to delete every unused file.
- **Empty Trash** and **Delete permanently** in Trash free the files that nothing else uses.
- **Remove file** in a note takes the file out of that note only, and you can undo it. The file still counts while anything else uses it, then for 30 days as **Unused**.

In a browser workspace, or with Sync off, **Delete file…** deletes the file from this browser only, and this browser may hold its only copy. A file your account already keeps stays there.

When a larger size is available, **Get more storage** in Storage leads to it.

## When storage is full

New files can’t be added until there’s room. A file you attach isn’t added, and a line under the composer says why, with **Open Storage**. Writing, existing files, export and deleting files keep working.

If ThreadPage couldn’t check the space when you added a file, for example offline, the file shows **Waiting for storage space** and its note stays in this browser, marked **in this browser**. **Save & sync** says how many files wait. Each note goes to your account by itself once there’s room, and right away when you free space in Storage.

## Upload limits

Each account can upload up to 10 GB and 5,000 new files a day. Over any 30 days, it can upload its storage size plus 10 GB (15 GB with 5 GB of storage) and up to 20,000 files.

Past a limit, files wait in the browser that added them as **Waiting to upload**, and **Save & sync** says when they continue. Your text keeps syncing.

The first time you move notes from a browser into your account, these limits don’t hold it back, for up to 100,000 files. What it uploads still counts, so new files may wait for a while after it.

## Moving notes from this browser to your account

When you turn on Sync with Pro or a trial, or choose **Add notes** with Sync on, the notes kept in this browser go to your account, newest first. Notes without files never wait. A note whose files don’t fit in your storage stays in this browser with **Waiting for storage space** and goes up by itself once there’s room, while older notes keep going. If files won’t fit, the dialog says so before you start.

Drafts and recovery versions whose files don’t fit stay private to this browser.

## Shared places

Files people add to a place you share count toward your storage from the moment they attach them. A file someone attaches but never sends stops counting after 24 hours. People you share with can add files until your storage is 90% full; you can add until it’s full. They don’t see your usage, only that there’s no room.

In each place, a person can add up to 50 files and 4 GB a day, and the place takes up to 200 files a day. All the people you share with together use at most half of your upload limits. **Storage** shows who added each file.

## Phones, other devices and offline

With Pro and Sync on, your files show on every device where you use ThreadPage with Sync on. Image previews and video posters download in the background, newest notes first, so recent notes show them offline too. Anything else downloads when you open it, so offline you can open only what this browser already has.

A file added on another device shows **Not uploaded yet** until that device uploads it. Files you add offline are saved in this browser and upload when you’re back online.

On a phone whose browser can share files, **Open in another app** in a file’s viewer passes it to the share sheet, where you can save it or send it.

## When Pro ends

Your cloud copy becomes read-only. You can still open, download, export and delete its files. New files stay in this browser, marked **Waiting for Pro** in Storage, and go to your account when Pro is back. A larger size you paid for ends with Pro.

If the copy still holds more than 5 GB of files at least 90 days after Pro ends, its largest files can be deleted after two emails. [When Pro ends](https://thread.page/help/billing.md#when-pro-ends) in Plans & billing explains the dates and how to keep them.

## Export a backup

Open **Settings → Import & export → Export backup**. The backup holds folders, threads, notes, drafts, Archive, Trash, recovery versions and the original of every file. Keep the downloaded file outside this browser.

To save one file, choose **Download** in its menu in Storage or in its viewer.

For another app, choose **Export to other apps** instead; [Export your notes](https://thread.page/help/export.md) describes each format.

## Import a copy

Choose **Import notes** in Import & export, then **ThreadPage backup**, and select the file. Review its contents before importing. Importing as a copy keeps existing notes.

Notes from other apps come in the same way: [Import from other apps](https://thread.page/help/import.md).

## Before clearing browser data

Export first. Clearing this site’s data removes everything this browser keeps. On Free, or with Sync off, that’s your notes and files, which otherwise stay here with no time limit. With Pro and Sync on, it’s whatever hasn’t reached your account yet: when **Save & sync** says **Saved to account**, everything here, files included, is in your account.

**Request protection** under **Browser storage** in Settings → Import & export asks your browser not to clear ThreadPage’s data when space runs low. The browser decides whether to grant it.

## Private browsing

Private browsing and browser storage restrictions can prevent your workspace from opening. Open ThreadPage in a regular browser window to keep writing.
